Comparing Ways to Sell Bike Parts Online

Shopify: the Experiment

In the quest to make it through winter, we are trying out Shopify. I have tried to use Google docs as an inventory sheet as well as an online list of products that I have for sale. It is not working. For one, nobody has enough time or desire to decipher it.

I watched this video to bore myself to tears on “How do work Shopify”.

Why Didn’t Google Docs Survive as a Store

The reason that I attempted to use Google docs as a store is because I could monitor the inventory on the same sheet. Double data entry is a time-suck. As a one-man op in this bike shop, systems that are adopted must be easy and worthwhile.

WooCommerce Wasn’t Fun to Use

I could not like WooCommerce no matter how much I tried. Here is the beginnings of my Shopify experiment. During the process of creating a store, I tried ebay and Amazon. Neither idea is killed: they are experiments in the making.

The Bear of Amazon

Amazon, I filled out the complicated tax form online and miss-fired the legal name of Standard Bike Repair. When I went back into Amazon seller, it was easy to re-do the “Tax Interview”. The site was fast and easy to comprehend. It was obvious what I did wrong which is put my last name in the line of the SBR legal name.

In Experiment Selling Online Sphere 2: ebay, I have a single bid on a pair of Campy Ergo Lever shifters selling for $75.00, a 25.00 seatpost selling for $70 an an 8sp rear hub selling for $25. Speaking of Campy hubs, I wonder how my hubs are doing.

Quest to Generate Website Hits to Feed my Ego

Stumble Upon… I just dropped the post Campy C Record Hubs For Sale and Snow blog post on it. I will stay tuned on Google Analytics to see how often this site works. My goal is to send something viral.

Playing with Celebrities

Jake Plummer lives in Boulder. I want to throw the football with him.

TV Shows that I am Hooked On

The Wire

My addiction to television has come back strong since I was a child. As a young boy, I watched a lot of Batman and Robin without being able to hear it.

Those were the days that Closed Captioning for the Hearing Impaired didn’t exist. And it was before I was diagnosed with a high frequency hearing loss.

The first twelve years of my life with hearing aids were pre-digital. The amplified sound of the analog hearing aid reminded me of a school principal screeching the mic.

When the hearing aid technology advanced, I heard the scrapes of movement. I could hear voices on television and birds in the trees.

ADD and the Small Business Owner

Now that I work from home and it is winter, my mind needs to stay active or I will drive myself bonkers in this 400 square foot tiny home that doubles as a bike shop. Between the large entrance room that houses the professional repair stand and the wall of tools and the parts room at the end of the 44 ‘x 12′ carriage home, the business part of the abode takes about 2/3rd’s the total space. Even in the 10′ x 11’ bedroom there are manila folders and office supplies.

The bedroom is in the office.
I sleep in the office.
