BIKE SHOP OWNERSHIP TEAM IN BOULDER COLORADO

Ryan Kelley is the owner of Standard Bike Repair. He operates the business out of a home in an alley near central Boulder. Across Arapahoe is the Goss/Grove area. Over the creek and up the hill is the University of Colorado Rec Center and Folsom Field Stadium. Businesses that run along Arapahoe within a Par 4 from the shop are Valero Gas Station, Jalino’s Pizza, the Land Rover Mechanic, Rocky Mountain Anglers, the Glass Store and Snarf Burger formerly known as Daddy Bruce’s BBQ.

The alley is between 18th and 19th running parallel to Marine St. and Arapahoe. Despite our 1823 Marine St. registered address, the shop is virtually unseen from Marine St. Approach us from the alley, you will find us squished between Student Condos and underneath trees.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN SERVICES?

1. Watch/Help/Learn: for 42.00 per hour, we teach you to have as much hands on use of tools and mechanics as possible. If Ryan is doing the tools, then that is because you would rather Watch than Do. Often times, Ryan can do the repair on the spot in a short amount of time. If you bring your bike in before there are 17 things wrong with it, then it will be reasonably priced. If you Do it yourself, it is likely that you will not have to pay for that particular service again. Some Quick Tunes are a half-hour or less, other take 2 hours. Depending on your patience and willingness, the Watch/Help/Learn is often the more inexpensive long term and short. We would rather get paid and return your bike back on the spot than keep it until we get to it, move it back and forth from outside to in each morning and night. It is a win for everybody. You learn, we get paid on the spot for our time and advice. In a time sensitive world, we strive for an Appointment Dominated Business. Like showing up for class or visiting a doctor, we schedule a time and get it done.

2. Custom Recycled Bike: Would you like to build a bike from the frame up using new wheels and refurbished parts? We can schedule a time to meet with you to talk design, pricing and building. Your budget can be as little as 300.00 to the size of some people’s paychecks. A deposit of half-down of anticipated budget is required at time of initial consultation. After the Design Meeting, it is Build Time. We set up two 2-3 Hour Blocks of Time to produce your bike. Manufacturing with new and recycled parts is a curious joy. A Custom Recycled Bike is built on the Conversations between Ryan and You. From cyclocross to cruiser, we can build any bike with a frame that already exists.

3. Repair: If you need a specific thing done to your bike, we have a Complete List of pricing features on this page.  It is not required that you participate in the tune-up.

4. Used Parts Outdoor Store: We have a 10 x 15 tent with scatters of used part bins. They are fairly well organized. When we Build Custom Bikes, we charge 1.00 for parts out of our bins. If you are just stopping by to buy a part, it will be the cost of the part, plus the time that You and Ryan search for the part. For the most part, I know what we have and if we don’t have what you need, then we do not charge for advice and the search.

5. Bikes and Beers parties: Next one is Sept. 27th from 7-10pm. Bikes and Beers are more like an Open House than a Student Kegger. We check ID’s and our clientele centers around the 25-50 range. More of our customers are locals than students. That is good because we don’t like getting into trouble for our quarterly parties. Live music stops at 10pm and we obey all rules and requests from neighbors. Check the Facebook event page for the latest festival.

6. One-Day Internships: If you would like to Donate Four Hours of Free Labor, we supply you with a Free T-shirt and you get to help us sort used parts and otherwise follow Ryan around helping with the Day-to-Day operations of the Bike Business.

7. Wheel Building Classes. We will build wheels with you using our Morizumi Spoke Machine, Park Tool Truing Stand, Wheelsmith tensiometer, DT Swiss Spokes, Brass Nipples, Spoke Prep, ERD tape measure and Damon Rinard’s Spoke Length Calculator.

8. A Store. We have used and new bike parts in our store. The in-progress online depiction of what we have in stock is here. We have thousands more parts. It is impossible without an assembly line team to constantly track the parts coming into the system.

STANDARD BIKE REPAIR IS A BUSINESS MODEL OPERATED OUT OF A HOME

Ryan and Jen live in the Bike Shop. We open at 10am and close at 5pm Monday through Saturday. During Summer Business Hours, we are open from morning till dark. During Business Hours, Walk-ins are Square. During Winter Business Hours, we close at 5pm. Winter Hours include two weekday nights a week that we leave open for appointments.

Every once in a while, no one is at the shop. Calling via telephone is always the best way to reach us Right Now. A message before you arrive helps not-Having-Crossover-Appointments.

As an Appointment Dominated Business, we schedule time based on Customer Needs & the SBR Calendar.

Our business is designed to fix and build bikes. If you need services related to the bicycle, we have answers.

MY BIKE IS BROKEN. I AM FREE NOW. MAY I COME IN TODAY?

Almost every day, we have a time slot times two available for “I-Need-to-get-my-Bike-Repaired-Today”. Please utilize one of the dozen ways listed to communicate before you come over. Likely we will have something in the Watch/Help/Learn and Drop=it-Off Categories.

CALENDAR TIME: CAN I BRING MY BIKE IN X-DAY?

To Make an Appointment: Please call, email or Facebook. Sometimes, our business phone is away from our pockets or We-are-with-a-Customer. We check our voicemail and will call you back. Ryan’s partial deafness leads to Can’t-Hear-the-Phone- Half-the-Time. The computer is always on and thus is Facebook.

TEXTING

We don’t like texting on the business phone. But we will do it. Extended Questions on Bike Repair Theory are best left to in-Person Communication.

IMAGE SENDING

People send us images of their bikes via smartphone all the time. Texting/Image Sending is a Modern Way to do Business. However, Ryan has a major problem with being addicted to his iPhone that he broke one day. Then went back to the flip phone.

We are busy in appointments and walk-ins all day. On summer days, we open longer because it is nice out. Technically, our shop closes at 5pm Monday through Saturday. That way we can do things like go to next Tuesday’s Rockies vs. Red Sox game. During the winter when it is dark out, we prefer to schedule two Open weeknights per week. Please call, text, email, image send, shout from a long distance, visit, announce via a Public Blog engagement into available times.

Fridays are Walk-in Fridays. We welcome Walk-Right-Up-And-Fix-My-Bike Repair Services every day.

Special Note to Google Directions: The Red Arrow-Bubble shows us in the Middle of the Block accessible through the alley. We have one parking space in front of the gate for shop customers. The Written Directions from Google will lead you to an invisible 1823 Marine St. on Marine St. Save for a small weathered piece of paper near the mailbox, there is no evidence of us on Marine St. Follow the Sidewalk Back and to your right. Or drive in through the alley on 18th. or 19th. St. The parking space is between the Front Part of the Store and the 6ft. wooden fence. Park in front of our patio table.
