Backstory of Standard Bike Repair:
SBR operated out of a cute cottage home for fifteen years starting in 2010. The first two years, Ryan operated it on a part-time basis. He started it with almost zero knowledge of bike repair.

Watch/Help/Learn
When Ryan first moved to Boulder, he was fascinated with the ability to be able to cycle to work, grocery stores and coffee shops. He got a vintage road bike and would often find himself in Full Cycle talking to the mechanics about improving his ride.
One day, he witnessed a man check-in his bike to the mechanic, and say: I don’t know when you are planning to fix the bike, but I was wondering if I could watch you work on it. I can bring beer too, if that would interest you.
The mechanic said: No. I don’t know when I am going to work on it. I wouldn’t want people to watch over my shoulder while I did. And there is probably liability issues.
Ryan: (silently) There is a business opportunity here.

The First Two Years
Ryan learned how to fix bikes. He somehow managed to get a wholesale bike parts account after opening a business checking account where he worked as a teller, then getting insured. Then he invited bike friends to hang, and build single speed bikes. The lure of wholesale bike parts and a place to build bikes was enough to create a beginning.
Once Ryan understood the simplicity of the single speed bike, there was a breakthrough.
The long story short is that: Ryan learned and you can too.
That is why the crux of Standard Bike Repair is Watch/Help/Learn.
Ryan was not necessarily “mechanically minded,” when he started the business. He did read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance as a twenty year old, and that taught him that it was okay to take breaks when you are stuck.
Becoming mechanical takes practice just like everything.
Whether you want to be a bike expert or just want to know more about your bike, scheduling a time to fix your bike will make you better equipped to own and maintain your bike.
You can watch. Or help. You will learn.
Most people do more watching than helping. I talk the way through it and explain what I am looking at. I will also engage you in conversation which facilitates a better overall experience.
When you participate in your tune-up, it is cheaper. We work fast and we only do what is necessary.
When you are not there, I assume it will be another year till I see the bike again, and everything gets done.
When you are there, certain things can be left alone, as long as you understand what we are looking at, and you can keep an eye on it.

A la Carte Services and Drop-Off Bike Repair
We also offer drop-off services and specific fixes. I don’t have a Pricing List posted, but you are welcome to call to ask for things. I will say that most of our pricing is similar to other shops in town. If pricing is absolutely an issue for you, I encourage a Watch/Help/Learn. It is $90 per hour, but it will go fast, and we attack “the worst things first.”
