The Story of Our Logo

ai file

On a dark and non-stormy cold night in March, Christopher Cole, and I were at his home office, with Gary of Fat Kitty Cycles on the phone. In 15 minutes, Chris sprung up a set of wrenches with a heart in the middle via the Adobe software. He lent his artwork to the artistic Communikey regularly. His knack for design put a brand on Standard Bike Repair.

But that was not why we were there. At that point, Standard was Kevin Stiffler’s toolbox, a single repair stand and an outdoor picnic table. Gary invited me to the Boulder Bike Swap party nice and early. Our goal was “Design a poster with logo for the revived Boulder Bike Swap”. Steven Herzfeld of  VeloZephyr  and Boulder Indoor Cycling gave us the run of the velodrome indoor and out. The parking lot was ours to invite 1,000 plus people.

We hired 5 bands, brought in food from Jamba Juice and AJ’s Top of the Hill Grill. The giraffes did not make it into town for the festival.

I liked the logo. Gary did not think it was the greatest. The conversation started like: “Gary, after the Boulder Bike Swap is over, can I use the logo for my business?”

We made t-shirts, painted a heart on the wall of the shop, posters, and flyers of bike mechanic love.
