You Can Buy a Business for Less than a Lexus
When Ryan broke up with Jen, the crisis included trying to sell his business for $400K. Suzanne M. De Lucia of Front Range Business Incorporated took him seriously. The meeting between Suzanne and Ryan was like a professor teaching Ryan. With a whiteboard and pen, Suzanne taught Ryan terminology related to assessing a company’s worth.
Suzanne:”Ryan, you can sell your business. However, it is going to sell for a lot less than you think.”
Ryan: “I am not selling my bike shop with the thought that it could make someone rich. I am selling a job.”
Suzanne: “You might want to think about licensing Standard Bike Repair. You could get people to open Standard Bike Repairs in living rooms across the United States.”
Ryan: “Given that some bike part distributors are refusing to grant my company a wholesale account on the belief that the bike part prices are being driven down by the local guy, not internet gargantuans, the prospective owner would have to spend a lot of time online buying products for his shop. You can buy online just as cheaply as any wholesale account. To outfit an entire shop via dozens of different sources would be a huge amount of time devoted to buying.”
Suzanne: “True. There are a lot of things to think about.”
Ryan: “True. Killer whales, sharks and plankton in the Ocean of Business equal a wide array of danger and food.”
Suzanne showed Ryan a website that had thousands of businesses for sale. A sizable amount of businesses are on the market for less than a year’s college tuition. Two bike shops in Boulder were for sale.
Types of Businesses are For Sale Online
Suzanne’s business facilitates the buying and selling of businesses. Like going to a used car dealer, you can walk into Front Range Business Inc. and buy a used business.
Types of Businesses For Sale: Bike Shops, Accounting Offices, Website Development Businesses, Franchises, and Hotels.
Power: Buy a Business. Start a Business.
The economy is shifting away from thirty-year corporate men to entrepreneurship and job jumping. Almost everyone on Facebook seems to be pitching their friends. Radio ads talk about lawyers specializing in helping you set up your business.
Going to business school was great for Ryan. Where he really learned business: working at US Bank for four years.
Best Part of Wide Eyez
Looking at the Front Range on the bridge over east Pearl St: the mountains are clear and it feels like you are protected from the sun.
Peripheral view is expanded. The visor spreads over your face. Ryan’s mom likes that he wears a helmet with his Wide Eyez.
Being under Wide Eyez is like looking out a window.
Hint: You do not need to pay a Lawyer to start a Corporation
Go to your State’s Department of Revenue’s website and patiently go through the bureaucracy. Better yet, stroll down to 29th St. Mall and visit David Hesse, Chris Cirelli or Maxton Hughes at US Bank. In the name of opening a Business Checking Account, they will gladly go through the steps of opening a business with you. It is free to open a business bank account. They get points for opening an account. The State website is not hard. Back in the day, Ryan advised Evan Salais to go to a lawyer instead of the website to open a business and he got slapped by a $750 fee. Business is a logical process. The steps are linear.
Start a business. Sell, sell, sell. Open a website, have a product. Go.
Some people do not want to start a business. Some prefer to have a defined set of tasks to complete and a regular paycheck.
With the weight of earning money on your performance, some people get still or distract. Others are scared into motion. Joe Montana said it was not the glory of winning that motivated him, but the fear of losing.
Tell everybody. Wear the t-shirt.
Taylor Newton wears the t-shirt. Not in this picture.

High school grads and Under-employed Americans
Consider buying a business as one of your career options.
Bank Teller for Four Years:
Ryan learned that rich people own businesses. Most people are week to week. Entrepreneurs are day to day. Eye on the future; focus on today.

Ryan’s Pet Peeve #1: Underemployed
Running Standard Bike Repair takes 100% effort. He wishes that everyone is challenged by their life’s work. In today’s society, the sheer numbers of people and the systems that are in place to feed and care for the people result in large numbers of people doing jobs just for a paycheck. Self-empowerment thru business ownership is a remarkable thing.
Pet Peeve #2:
People that move states, then adamantly root for their original state’s team. If that team was so special, why did you leave?
Ryan moved eight times in his first eighteen years, including California, Australia, Illinois, Oregon, Kansas, and Missouri. The Kansas City Chiefs are not Ryan’s favorite football team.
